The question is; what punishment is “ok” and what is not?

A rather debatable subject indeed.

As I sit here thinking about the days events, a few things about this topic came to mind. I remember the days when I myself was a child and the many things I used to get punished for. The question is; what punishment is “ok” and what is not?

As a father, one tends to ask these questions each time you have to play the disciplined parent role and what we as parents tend to overlook is; what are we really telling our kids while punishing them? The reason I brought this topic up was because I used to get thrashings (not smacks) as a kid from both my parents. Yes, it probably made me a better man in some ways, but in other ways I believe some of those traits may have carried over.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like the idea of smacking kids but is there a time when its needed and can a person raise a respectable child without the occasional smack? Here’s an example that I’ll never forget!

When I was young (about 10) I remember a box of fresh chocolate donuts being on the fridge. I used to be an eczema sufferer as a child and couldn’t generally eat chocolate and if I did, I would flare up quite badly.

That day I decided to “steal” the chocolate off the donuts and once I was done I got the beating of my life that till this day I have NEVER forgotten!

I personally think it was harsh of my parents but I don’t hold it against them. I can honestly say that I never stole anything from that day on.

When we hit our kids, are we sending them “It’s ok to hit your children one day” or are we telling them “I’m doing this because I love you and want you to grow up to be a good person”.

The bottom line is; when is it ok to smack your kids and to what degree is it acceptable?

If you look at the world a few years ago (back when schools could discipline children), our youth were far more “in line”. Today the children bring weapons, do drugs, have sex and do everything that children are not supposed to do…because they are children!

I’d like to correctly state that there is a difference between beating your kids and disciplining them. I’m not saying smack your kids in the face or belt them but I am saying that discipline is a very important factor if you want your kids to grow up to be respectable people of society. The main question still applies however…how far apart is the difference between abuse and discipline?

Some of you may say; “there’s more to discipline than smacking a child” and I fully agree with you but there are people in this world that still believe that a smack or two can only do good (if done right).
